В середине 80-х женщина-вокалистка не являлась редкостью в тяжелом роке. Масса одаренных и не очень певиц штурмовала сцену в надежде сыскать любовь и уважение металлической аудитории, преимущественно состоящей из лиц мужского пола, и долгое время ни одной женщине не удавалось занять этот трон. С тех пор многое изменилось, и певицы, когда-то пленявшие сердца мужественных металлистов давно забросили музыку. За одним исключением - Доро. Она по праву завоевала статус Металлической леди номер один! Доро оказалась первой женщиной, которая развеяла стереотип о том, что Хэви Метал не женское дело и заставила воспринимать себя всерьез, потеснив не один десяток мужчин на звездном небосклоне.
Доро Пэш (Dorothee Pesch) родилась 3 июня 1964 года в немецком городе Дюссельдорф. Музыкой она увлеклась еще в подростковом возрасте и уже в 17 лет пела в группе SNAKEBITE. К сожалению, юная фрау не отличалась здоровьем, и в 1982 году на целый год оказалась в больнице с диагнозом - туберкулез. Врачи не обещали Дороти светлого будущего и, выписавшись из больницы, она решила пожить в свое удовольствие столько, сколько ей осталось, и устроилась вокалисткой в местную группу WARLOCK, которую основал гитарист Руди Граф (Rudy Graf). Он же, кстати, присмотрел коллективу название в какой-то книге о ведьмах. Появление в составе очаровательной белокурой вокалистки с великолепным голосом моментально превратило доселе малоизвестный коллектив в любимцев хард-рок сцены Дюссельдорфа.
В конце 1983 года WARLOCK записывают свое первое и единственное демо в составе: Доро Пэш - вокал, Руди Граф - гитара, Питер Сигети (Peter Szigeti) - гитара, Франк Риттел (Frank Rittel) - бас и Михаэль Эйрих (Michael Eurich) - ударные. Демо содержало в себе четыре композиции: Burning The Witches, Iron Lady, Cry For The Rebel и Watch Out, которое очень неплохо разошлось в андеграунде, и принесло группе контракт с бельгийской независимой фирмой Mausoleum Records. Легенда гласит, что запись группы прислал на фирму оставшийся безвестным поклонник коллектива.
В 1984 году выходит дебютный альбом Burning The Witches, который получает массу положительных откликов. Причем он был прекрасно принят не только в Германии, где название группы и так было у всех на устах, но и в Англии, где WARLOCK получили немало восторженных отзывов в прессе. Еженедельник Kerrang!, в частности, поставил диску максимальную оценку - 5 баллов. С точки зрения сегодняшнего дня пластинка кажется наивной, плюс к этому в вокальных партиях прослушивается более чем ощутимый немецкий акцент. Тем не менее, для 1984 года это был очень сильный материал, во многом развивающий лучшие идеи классиков немецкого рока. Среди многообразия боевиков на этом альбоме особо запоминаются: энергичная "открывашка" Sign Of Satan, посвящение ночным байкерам - Metal Racer, очередная экологическая катастрофа в After The Bomb и, конечно, заглавный хит диска Burning The Witches. Диск оказался на голову сильнее предыдущего, и группа перебирается из клубов на куда более солидные площадки. WARLOCK даже приняли участие в фестивале немецкого журнала Metal Hammer в компании с RUNNING WILD, PRETTY MAIDS, METALLICA и VENOM и с огромным успехом выступили в лондонском зале Camden Palace. Этот концерт был снят на видео и вышел на видеокассетах под названием Metal Racer. Надо заметить, что уже тогда атмосфера в коллективе добродушием не отличалась, по причине музыкальных разногласий. Доро Пеш, заявляла о желание направить звук в коммерческое русло, чтобы всех показывали по телевизору и отмечали в американских хит-парадах. Основатель команды, Руди Граф, уже почти потерявший контроль над собственным детищем, отчаянно требовал не мудрить и сочинять простенькие композиции в духе дебютного альбома. Но продюсер решает многое - именно поэтому Hellbound оказался основан на вкусах вышеупомянутой троицы и получился что-то вроде прогрессивного для того времени Хэви Метала. В конце года в магазинах появляется сингл под названием You Hurt My Soul. Он оказался последней записью с гитаристом Руди Графом, которого пришлось уволить под давлением фирмы грамзаписи. Новым гитаристом WARLOCK становится Нико Арвантис (Nicko Arvantis) игравший ранее в STORMWITCH, с которым группа укатила во вторую часть турне, играя на разогреве у SINNER.

Третий альбом True As Steel вышел 21 августа 1986 года, но встретил довольно сдержанный прием, как у поклонников, так и у критиков. Причина этого заключалась в некоторой сглаженности звука и наметившихся трениях в составе группы, которые стали отчетливо прослушиваться в музыке. Тем не менее, в наличие имеются шикарные и довольно закрученные номера вроде открывающего альбом скоростного боевика Mr. Gold, мистической эпопеи Midnight In China или лирической Love In The Danger Zone. Ну, а все признаки будущего стиля WARLOCK пробиваются из настоящего стадионного гимна True As Steel, красивой баллады Love Song и, конечно, наиболее показательного в этом плане номера Fight For Rock, на который было отснято видео. В конце 1986 года группу приглашают открывать престижнейший фестиваль Monsters Of Rock в Донингтоне наряду с OZZY OSBOURNE, SCORPIONS и BON JOVI, а Доро становится первой женщиной, которая выступает на этом фестивале.

Разногласия по поводу дальнейшего направления развития коллектива приводят к серьезному расколу в его рядах. Дело в том, что лейбл и менеджмент начинает активно давить на Доро, убеждая ее в необходимости работать в более коммерческом, американизированном направлении. Уже Tue As Steel делался в угоду американской публике, но поскольку желаемый результат не был достигнут, требовалось сделать выводы. Жертвами этих выводов стали Питер Сигети и Фрэнк Риттел, которых сменили два американца - гитарист Томми Болан (Tommy Bolan) игравший до этого в ARMED FORCES и басист Томми Хенриксен (Tommy Henriksen).
В начале 1987 года Доро перебирается в Нью-Йорк, и там записывает на Powerstation Studios новый альбом, который выходит 29 сентября на лейбле Mercury Records. Продюсером становится Джоуи Балин (Joey Balin). Сказать, что этот диск стал успешным - значит, не сказать ничего. В мгновение ока группа хорошо известная в Европе обрела звездный статус по всему миру. К альбому было снято два видео: All We Are и Fur Immer.

WARLOCK отыграли триумфальное турне… И тут группе вдруг пришел конец. Молодые музыканты не имели никакого опыта в бизнесе и за свою недолгую карьеру наподписывали немало контрактов, которые потом вышли им боком. Один из них предоставлял менеджеру группы полное право использовать имя WARLOCK. Когда группа решила с ним расстаться, он объявил, что имя WARLOCK принадлежит ему, а не музыкантам, и они не имеют права под ним выступать. Последующие судебные разборки окончились не в пользу группы, и имя срочно пришлось менять. Тут вновь вмешалась фирма грамзаписи, которая заявила, что будет работать с группой, только если они назовутся Doro и не как иначе. Чтобы сохранить контракт, группа согласилась. То есть, согласилась сама Доро и басист Хенриксен. Остальные музыканты сочли за лучшее поискать счастья в другом месте.
